Dear intrepid traveler,

You’ll explore the Old Town’s charming alleys, discover secret passages, and navigate scenic wooden walkways—all while tackling plenty of stairs and unexpected adventures along the way.
Designed to provide a dynamic bird’s-eye perspective of Zurich, this hike ensures you’ll leave with a real sense of having “done” the city—without missing a beat.
Trail Overview
At 9 km (5.6 mi), this hike is no casual stroll—it's perfect for active travelers who are comfortable walking long distances and climbing stairs.
With an elevation gain of approximately 300m (ca. 1,000 ft), this experience is ideal for those who regularly walk 10,000 steps daily and enjoy challenges.
The looped route starts and ends at the picturesque Bürkliplatz, by the shores of Lake Zurich, though the meeting point can be customized. Expect to be out for at least 3 hours.
What to Expect
-
Old Town
We begin by hiking through the cobblestone streets of Zurich’s historic Altstadt (Old Town), uncovering secluded courtyards, medieval fountains, and iconic landmarks.
Along the way, we’ll slip into hidden alleys and staircases, immersing ourselves in the city's rich past while capturing some of its most picturesque panoramas.
-
East Bank & University
After crossing the Limmat River, we enter the city's lesser-known eastern quarter, a treasure trove of historic guild houses, artisan boutiques, and age-old trades like goldsmiths and tea blending.
Climbing towards the University of Zurich, we’ll pass locations associated with some of the world’s greatest thinkers, including a certain "Herr Professor" known for his work in quantum physics (hint: E=mc²).
The reward? Unbeatable city views, made even sweeter by the effort it took to reach them.
-
Fortifications & Canals
For the final stretch, we cross back to Zurich’s west side, taking the road less traveled along elevated wooden walkways and the city's historic protective canal.
This hidden gem—virtually unknown to visitors—offers a glimpse into Zurich’s medieval defenses and a chance to experience the city like a local. Feeling adventurous? You might even dip your feet in the water or take a spontaneous wild swim to celebrate the journey!
